Florida Begins Recovery After Hurricane Milton: 16 Dead, Millions Without Power

Hurricane Milton devastated Florida after making landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm near Siesta Key on Wednesday night. The storm brought torrential rain, strong winds, and a powerful storm surge, leaving at least 16 people dead and millions without power.

In the aftermath, rescue efforts are underway, with more than 50,000 linemen deployed to restore power to 3 million homes and businesses that were affected. The storm triggered numerous tornadoes, including one that claimed six lives in a retirement village in St. Lucie County, highlighting the widespread impact of Milton’s destructive force.

Although the storm weakened to a Category 1 as it crossed Florida and exited into the Atlantic, the risk of flooding was high. Sarasota County, where Milton first hit, saw storm surges of up to 10 feet, submerging homes and streets. Governor Ron DeSantis described the situation as significant, although not as severe as originally anticipated, particularly in comparison to Hurricane Helene, which had hit earlier in the season.

Both Hurricanes Helene and Milton serve as sobering reminders of the dangers posed by Florida’s hurricane season, which runs from June to November, and the need for Floridians to reinforce their homes against future storms.
